Continues the multicultural tradition of Zion Church since its
foundation in 1755 as a center for German immigrants. The Forum is
committed to intensive cooperation with existing organizations
maintaining links to Europe, especially Germany. The German-American
organizations, existing now or in the future, are viewed as welcome
partners of he Forum.
The Forum is headed by a Board of six members and a
Director, presently the Rev. Dr. Eric W. Gritsch. Regular and special
events, both old and new, reflect a broad range of activities.
Annual Events
1. Lutherfest
on the
Sunday nearest the birthday of Martin Luther, November 10. It features
presentations and discussions of Luther’s life and work, such as his
work on the German language through his Bible translation; his music and
his family life. The evening program (7-9:00 p. m) includes a
Bratwurst-Beer Supper.
2.
Christkindlmarkt
(Christmas
Market) on the Saturday (11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) and Sunday after
Thanksgiving (noon to 5:00 p.m.) is a genuinely German shopping
experience, featuring the famous Nuremberg baking goods, arts and
crafts, evergreen arrangements, “Gluehwein” (mulled wine), Bratwurst
and other foods. The event is also sponsored by the “Baltimore
Kickers”, founded in 1953 for the promotion of German sports and
cultural activities.
3.
Karneval Ball, an
elegant, formal, evening of dinner and dancing in the Adlersaal
in February on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday (8:00 p.m. -
midnight) with live, German music. Black tie /or costume mark
this elegant, old-fashioned ball at the end of the carnival season.
Other Events
Poetry readings, films and other events reflecting
historic and/or contemporary German culture. Sponsoring concerts (choir,
organ and other music) of visiting German artists, such as the famous
Dresden choir, featuring 17th century classic works, or the
official German marine-band choir from Kiel. Various events are
cosponsored by the German Embassy In Washington, DC.
